Ways to maximize
storage space
One way to solve a storage problem and keep items
in use where you need them is to have a unit built to precisely fit a
particular space and purpose. Alcoves, niches, and knee walls (see page
194) can be outfitted with built-ins that make use of space that would
otherwise go to waste. If you can imagine it, the odds are that someone
can build it for you.
The great thing about built-ins is that they're custom-made to fit a space
exactly. A wall is an obvious place to install built-in units or shelves,
but what if your home is open plan and lacks walls? A partition wall can
provide storage, as well as divide up a large space in a great room or large
master bedroom, thereby separating eating or sleeping areas from those designated
for working or socializing.
Window seats or banquettes are popular additions to kitchens, living rooms,
dining rooms, and bedrooms, and can also provide extra storage space under
the seat. The storage areas are accessed either by lifting the seat or opening
drawers or hinged doors beneath it.
Another solution: Instead of a bed that already has a headboard, buy a simple
frame and have a headboard built that has a shelf, plus night-table surface
and drawers on either side. You can even include electrical outlets and
lighting connections so you can install wall sconces for nighttime reading.

BUILT-IN VS. FREESTANDING
Considering a storage unit? Built-ins and freestanding
pieces both have their pros and cons.
Built-ins
Pro Since built-in units can be designed to fit an area
exactly, they can make efficient use of every inch of space. You
may find that one built-in can do the work of two or more freestanding
pieces. You can opt for a plain, unadorned unit that will meld with
the wall, or one that includes moldings and cornices that make it
a decorative part of the room.
Con The downside is that you'll need to either get out
your hammer or hire someone to build the unit for you. And as with
any other custom-made piece, you usually pay more than you would
for a ready-made freestanding unit.
Freestanding
Pro Freestanding storage can be a bookcase, dresser, desk
with drawers, or armoire. You have plenty of options in terms of
style. And while built-ins are usually made of wood, freestanding
pieces can be made of metal, glass, plastic, or other materials.
They can also be moved easily from room to room or replaced if you
get tired of them.
Con Freestanding pieces are not usually as space efficient
as built-ins.

Shaker
Chic
"A
place for everything and everything in its place," was a
major motto of the Shakers, a religious community known for its
simple yet beautifully made furniture. Shaker rooms featured lots
of built-ins (one reason was that it saved time spent cleaning
underneath and on top of cabinets) and wall pegs for hanging chairs
when not in use.
